COLORADO — The Colorado Fourteeners Initiative (CFI) has been monitoring hiking use on Colorado's 14,000-foot peaks (14er) using infrared trail counters since 2014. Hiking some or all of Colorado's 58 14,000-plus foot peaks is a passion for residents and visitors alike. The exhilarating pastime benefits hikers and our economy.

ALAMOSA — After years of gathering data, planning, networking, pitching, applying for grants, and building a strong foundation of community support, a major milestone was celebrated Tuesday evening with a groundbreaking ceremony for a new early childhood learning center on the property of the Boys and Girls Clubs of the San Luis Valley (BGCSLV).  

ALAMOSA — The two candidates running to fill the congressional seat vacated by Rep. Lauren Boebert — Democratic nominee Adam Frisch and Republican nominee Jeff Hurd — will be on the same stage on Sept. 18, and voters can hear directly from the candidates themselves about their views on a number of topics.  

ALAMOSA — Alamosa resident Larry Chavez, 33, was in court on Tuesday morning, where a preliminary hearing was set for Oct. 30. In the preliminary, the presiding judge will determine if there is enough evidence to order Chavez to stand trial for allegedly killing Enrique Parra. 

ALAMOSA – Adams State University announced the institution continued to see an upward swing in undergraduate enrollment this fall, building on last year’s success. The University undergraduate enrollment is up nearly 5 percent from 2023.

ALAMOSA — Adam Frisch, Democratic candidate for Congressional District CO-3 (CD3), launched a new broadscale ad campaign on Monday where he not only pledges to protect water in the district but also questions connections his Republican opponent, Grand Junction attorney Jeff Hurd, has to "special interests" working to export valuable water from the San Luis Valley to the Front Range. 

CONEJOS — Due to a fire in the Conejos County Courthouse on Aug. 29, the courthouse offices will be closed until further notice. In the meantime, the county is diligently working on getting temporary offices set up.   

SOUTH FORK – For the first time since the Alder Ass Race came to South Fork, the burro race was dubbed the largest in Colorado over the weekend. Over 130 racers and their burros descended on the small mountain town filling Brown Memorial Park. 

ALAMOSA — Alamosa County Clerk and Recorder Mari Felix appeared in court on Wednesday where she entered a plea of not guilty to the charge of accessory to a crime. The charge against Felix is related to her alleged connection to a case involving her husband, Martin Felix-Lopez, who stands accused of sexual abuse of a child by a person in a position of trust.  

ALAMOSA – In the second year of what is certain to become a much-anticipated annual tradition, the Alamosa/Great Sand Dunes KOA Journey Campground Chili Cook-off is happening on Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. 

ALAMOSA – After notifying the next of kin, Alamosa County Coroner Joe Dzuris has identified and released the name of the victim whose body was discovered after crews extinguished the flames engulfing a house located at County Road 105 and 6 South.

FORT GARLAND — Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet visited the San Luis Valley on Tuesday, including a stop at the Fort Garland Museum and Cultural Center where, thanks to his advocacy, the museum received $164,000 to put toward expansion of the site’s existing geothermal heating system. 

ALAMOSA — U.S. Senator Michael Bennet met with over 25 San Luis Valley leaders on September 3 to discuss electric transmission lines in and out of the Valley.

LAKEWOOD — Along with 500 organizations representing a diverse range of stakeholders in conservation, agriculture, nutrition and other related sectors, the Colorado Cattlemen’s Agricultural Land Trust (CCALT) is strongly urging Congress to pass the 2024 Farm Bill before the end of the year.
