DEL NORTE — Del Norte served up some community fun Thursday as residents gathered to celebrate the completion of a new sand volleyball court located just down the street from North River Park.

The project, which aims to boost local outdoor recreation, was made possible through a collaborative effort. The Town of Del Norte supported the project, while funding was provided by the Robert Hoag Rawlings Foundation. Sol Mountain Farm and Landscaping was also instrumental in creating the space, handling all of the necessary dirt work to build the court.

Local residents and visitors alike expressed enthusiasm for the new addition to the town's recreational lineup, with many hoping it will foster a deeper sense of community.

"We saw what happened when Del Norte put a wave in the river ... a new community of surfers appeared," said resident Ike Mandobla, who attended the opening. "We are hoping that the same thing happens and we can get groups of volleyball players that show up each week. I attended the opening of the court and met five people I never knew before. I am excited to play in the future".

The sentiment was shared by newcomers and longtime area supporters, who praised the efforts of the town and local organizations.

"We are new to Del Norte, and we are over the moon about the sand court," Jessa Walter said. "We are grateful the city and D-Mountain Parks and Rec invested in volleyball and look forward to building up the community here".

Kaitlin Bradshaw noted the broader impact of the project on the area's wellness initiatives.

"I am very proud of the momentum Del Norte is gaining around healthy activities for the community," she said.

The court's opening even drew attendees from outside the immediate area, including Marlena, Jesse, Hazel and Ida, a group that drove from Alamosa for the event.

With summer in full swing, locals are already planning to make the court a staple of their seasonal routines.

"Del Norte is so lucky to have dedicated community members like D-Mountain. The new sand court is amazing," Makinzie Owsley said. "I am looking forward to playing all summer. Volleyball is awesome and everyone should come out and play".

For many, the project represents more than just a place to play sports; it is an investment in the town's future.

"We are beyond blessed to have a community motivated to invest in enrichment opportunities for all," Marlayna Martinez said.
