Colorado's children and youth are experiencing a mental health crisis. The initiative "Mind Our Future Colorado" - formed by Children's Hospital and Healthier Colorado - calls on Colorado’s gubernatorial candidates to commit to bold, comprehensive and realistic solutions to address the crisis and to ensure youth mental health is a top priority in the 2026 gubernatorial race and beyond.

The city of Alamosa is moving forward with plans to implement the use of Automated Vehicle Identification System (AVIS) as a way to enforce speeding and red light violations throughout the city.

Mineral County Emergency Manager Clint Leggitt, along with other local organizations, will be hosting a fire wise and prevention event on Thursday, May 21, at 5 p.m. at the Creede and Mineral County Chamber of Commerce, 904 S. Main St. Emergency service officials urge the public to attend, as there will be tips and tricks to help with fire prevention and mitigation.

An investigation led by APD in coordination with multiple other law enforcement agencies resulted in the seizure of fentanyl, other drugs, guns and US currency.

Rio Grande County leaders gathered on Friday, May 1, to celebrate the opening of newly constructed sports courts at the Del Norte Recreational Fields located just south of the Del Norte school district. The courts include a pickleball and basketball court, with the possibility of more uses in the future.  

Residents of the San Luis Valley are invited to grab their sombreros and maracas for the 2026 Cinco de Mayo festival, returning to Monte Vista on Saturday, May 2. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and features a classic car show, food trucks, local vendors, and live music from Colorado and New Mexico artists.

In "Airness", currently onstage at ASU Main Stage Theatre, a group of young, very energetic and somewhat divergent people with a history of playing the “air guitar” gear up for a national air guitar competition.  (And, yes, air guitar competition is a real thing.)

After a presentation on the current drought conditions, the City of Monte Vista announced it had put watering restrictions into place.  Pat McDermott of the Colorado Division of Water Resources gave a presentation on April 16 to the Monte Vista City Council on the current drought conditions in the San Luis Valley.  

 The Town of South Fork held a special meeting April 14 to swear in trustees and the new mayor.  South Fork held one of the most competitive elections to date with 12 candidates for a total of five positions. 

The Valley Courier and San Luis Valley Journal today announced they are combining operations to create a single newspaper with stories from all 6 counties, including some stories we haven't covered outside of Alamosa before.
