Wildlife safaris series begins March 22

SAN LUIS VALLEY — Trek with local experts to the Alamosa, Baca, and Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuges.  

Safaris are free and appropriate for novices as well as experienced adventurers. All ages are welcome, and no reservations are required. Wear appropriate footwear and clothing for the weather. Bring binoculars (loaners are available), a camera, water, a hat, sunscreen, and your curiosity. 

On March 22, meet at the Alamosa NWR Visitor Center at 8:30 a.m. 

Join guide Suzanne Beauchaine for this half-day safari, a diverse experience that includes viewing wintering bald eagles, observing spring migration, and learning about water management at Alamosa NWR. The trip will involve driving and some walking, ensuring a dynamic wildlife adventure. 

On April 12, meet at 9 a.m. at the Smith Reservoir near Fort Garland with guide: John Rawinski. 

Birding at Smith Reservoir for a half day. CPW Wildlife Stamp is required. Meet at the north entrance/boat ramp. Mostly walking on variable terrain, some driving. Rawinski's writing and photography have been featured in the Valley Courier. 

On April 19, meet at 8:30 a.m.-noon Monte Vista NWR Office. 

Guide: Suzanne Beauchaine for a behind-the-scenes outing on the Monte Vista NWR, including Spring migration and recent restoration projects. The outing will involve driving and some walking.
