SARGENT SCHOOL – The Sargent High School basketball teams hosted Sangre de Cristo Tuesday at the SHS gym with the teams splitting the games played.
In the girls game, sixth-ranked Sargent cruised to a 61-11 win over the Thunderbirds, while Sangre won the boys game by a score of 66-30.
Girls game
The Farmers got off to a hot start by scoring the first nine points. Kandace Pargin scored six of them, Aubrey Naranjo scored two, and Angelise Garcia one.
Belle Beiriger scored the Thunderbirds’ first basket. Garcia answered with a layup, but Tori Sorensen scored to bring Sangre within 11-4.
The rest of the first half was all Farmers. They led 19-4 after the first quarter, and they outscored the Thunderbirds 18-0 in the second quarter to take a 37-4 advantage at halftime.
The second half was played under a running clock, but Sargent still scored 16 points in the third quarter. Sangre scored seven.
The Farmers scored eight points in the fourth quarter and held the Thunderbirds scoreless.
Kandace Pargin led all scorers with 23 points, and Garcia was next with 16.
Beiriger was Sangre’s leading scorer with four points.

Boys game
Kolby Shellabarger got Sangre off to a good start with a 3-point basket. Kenyon Knorr got Sargent on the scoreboard with two free throws. Shellabarger split at the free throw line, but Corbin Castillo hit a jumper to tie the score at 4-4.
Deagon Rogers then got hot as he scored 12 points in the final 3:57 of the first quarter to give the Thunderbirds a 20-5 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Castillo scored the first points of the second quarter, but Ezra Lopez made a three, and Deklin Beiriger drove for a layup. Kyler Jones, scored for the Farmers, however, Rogers answered with a jumper.
Sargent cut the lead to 27-13, but Josh Baker and Lopez both made 3-pointers. Jaron Mason then hit a jumper and added a free throw to give Sangre a 36-13 advantage at halftime.
Josh Baker opened the second half with back-to-back baskets. Jones accounted for the Farmers’ first points of the third quarter, and Knorr followed with a jumper to narrow the deficit to 40-1`7.
Beirgier, Rogers and Lopez all buried treys and Rogers added a short jumper to push the lead to 51-17. River Hodgson made one of two free throws, but Brody Artaechevarria and Beiriger both scored to establish a running clock for the rest of the game. Sangre led 55-21 after the third quarter.
Cadyn Wright scored three points, Knorr two, and Castillo one to bring Sargent within 55-27. Rogers made a pair of charity tosses, but Knorr scored the Farmers’ only 3-pointer of the game.
Sangre scored the final nine points of the game.
Rogers led all scorers with 23 points, followed by Josh Baker with 10.
Knorr led Sargent with nine points.

What’s next
Sangre’s boys record is 3-1, and Sargent’s is 2-1. The Sargent girls are still undefeated at 3-0, and Sangre is 1-3.
Sargent is at the Cedaredge Invitational this weekend. Both teams opened the tournament with Plateau Valley and will play either Cedaredge or Mancos today.
Sangre de Cristo traveled to Walsenburg on Friday. It will next play at the La Veta Invitational on Dec. 19-20.
