CONEJOS COUNTY — Conejos County Sheriff Garth Crowther is requesting cooperation and assistance in keeping Conejos County’s backcountry roads safe during this winter-spring season.
“This year has presented unusual weather patterns, and we are experiencing conditions that are far from typical,” he says. “Specifically, there has not been enough snow accumulation in certain areas to keep people from accessing the backcountry roads.”
Crowther said that current conditions have resulted in several individuals getting stranded in deeper snow, requiring emergency assistance.
“Over the past two weeks, we have received numerous calls for help, and we want to avoid any further dangerous situations,” he said.
The public is urged to avoid traveling on backcountry roads in the county until conditions improve.
“While the desire to enjoy the outdoors is understandable, the safety risks are significant right now as vehicles can easily become stuck in snowdrifts or rough terrain. Your safety is our primary concern, and we appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we work together to ensure a safe winter/spring season for all,” he said.
Anyone with questions or concerns is encouraged to contact the Conejos County Sheriff’s Office at 719-376-2196.
