ALAMOSA – The eighth-seeded Monte Vista High School baseball team has advanced to the Final 4 of the Class 2A State Tournament which began this past weekend at the Runyon Sports Complex in Pueblo.
Forge Christian 10, Monte Vista 5
The Pirates gave top-seeded Forge Christian a game in the first round on Friday. However, the Fury pulled away late for a 10-5 victory.
Forge Christian scored a run in both the first and second innings, but Monte Vista scored four times in the third. The Fury tied the score at 4-4 in the bottom of the third.
The Pirates regained the lead with a run in the fourth, but the Fury again deadlocked the score in the fifth. Forge Christian then scored five runs in the sixth.
The Pirates had 10 hits. However, individual statistics for this game were unavailable.
Monte Vista 16, Peyton 0
The Pirates answered Friday’s loss with a 16-0 win over fourth-seeded Peyton on Saturday.
Monte Vista scored five runs in the first and three in the second. It scored four times in both the third and fourth to end the game on the 15-run rule.
Kaden Mellott went the distance on the mound and he took the win. He allowed no runs and two hits and he struck out four and walked none.
The Pirates had 11 hits and were led by Azariah Hurtado who went 2-3 with a triple and two RBIs, Jakoby Ross who went 2-3 with two RBIs, Mellott who went 2-4 with three RBIs, and Manny Jiron who went 2-4 with a triple and two RBIs.
Monte Vista 2, Fowler 1
Monte Vista continued the season with a 2-1 win over third-seeded Fowler later on Saturday.
The Pirates took the early lead with a run in the top of the first, but the Grizzlies tied the score in the second. Monte Vista regained the lead for good in the fourth and held Fowler scoreless the rest of the way.
Mellott again went the distance for the win. He gave up one run and five hits and he had one strikeout and one walk.
The Pirates had six hits and were led by Manny Jiron who went 2-3 with a double and one RBI. Hurtado had the other RBI.
What’s next
Monte Vista (18-7) will play sixth-seeded Denver Christian in the consolation round at 10 a.m. on Friday. This will be the second meeting between the teams this season with the Lightning winning 8-2 in the previous matchup.
Should the Pirates win, they will play seventh-seeded Platte Valley at 12:30 on Friday.
Should Monte Vista defeat the Broncos, it will play Forge Christian in the championship round on Saturday. However, the Pirates would have to defeat the Fury twice to win the title.
A loss will end the season.
