ALAMOSA – The Alamosa High School football team saw its shutout streak come to an end this past Friday against Salida, but it didn’t matter as the Mean Moose still recorded a big win as they defeated the Spartans 50-13 at the AHS stadium.

“Another big win for us,” said Alamosa coach Drew Sandlin. “I’m proud of the guys. We continue to put together all three phases of the football game to come out with the victory.”

The Spartans had the ball first but was forced to punt. The Mean Moose were able to get on the scoreboard on their first possession as Tony Griego went 46 yards on a quarterback keeper for the touchdown. A.J. Baker ran in the two-point conversion for an 8-0 Alamosa lead.

Salida ventured into Alamosa territory on its next possession but turned the ball over on downs.

After the teams traded punts, the Mean Moose extended their lead early in the second quarter. Baker ran 82 yards to put Alamosa into the red zone, and then Griego scored on a 2-yard run. Baker ran in another two-point play to increase the lead to 16-0.

The Spartans punted again on their next possession. The Mean Moose responded with Jo David scoring on a 1-yard plunge. Christian Hernandez kicked in the point-after for a 23-0 Alamosa lead.

The Mean Moose scored one more time before halftime as Griego tossed a 26-yard strike to Nelson Arambula. Hernandez’s extra point again was successful and Alamosa had a 30-0 advantage at the intermission.

The Mean Moose scored on the opening kickoff of the second half as Evan Anderson returned the kick 84 yards for a touchdown. Hernandez again made the point-after and Alamosa had a 37-0 lead.

The Mean Moose defense accounted for the next touchdown as Alejandro Vialpando intercepted Eli Schwarz and Vialpando ran 34 yards for the touchdown. The extra point attempt was unsuccessful, but Alamosa led 43-0.

The rest of the game was played under a running clock.

Salida got on the scoreboard with 5:45 left in the third quarter as Schwarz threw a 37-yard touchdown to Ayden Wells. Elijah Messick made the extra point.

After the teams exchanged lost fumbles late in the third, Alamosa scored early in the fourth as Zavier Maez ran into the end zone from four yards out. Hernandez made the point-after to help the Mean Moose reach the half-century mark.

The Spartans concluded the scoring as Schwarz and Wells hooked up again, this time on a 31-yard scoring strike. The extra point attempt was blocked.

Alamosa accumulated 387 yards of total offense. Griego completed five of nine passes for 84 yards, and Anderson completed his only attempt for 38 yards to give the Mean Moose a total of 122 yards in the air. Victor Zepeda was the top receiver with two catches for 45 yards.

Alamosa had 265 yards rushing with Baker leading the way with 133 yards on five carries. Griego had 82 yards on seven carries.

Salida had 214 total yards – 111 rushing and 103 passing.

Alamosa (6-2, 4-0) will conclude the regular season on Friday as it will travel to Pagosa Springs. The Intermountain League championship and an automatic berth into the Class 2A state playoffs are at stake.

“It will be a fun one,” Sandlin said. “I’m really looking forward to that night.”
