SARGENT SCHOOL – The sixth-ranked Sanford High School football team traveled to meet its long-time river on Saturday at the Farmers’ field.
The game was all Mustangs as they defeated the Farmers, 57-6.
“It was a great game for us,” said Sanford coach Cody Reynolds. “Everybody contributed and everybody was ready to go. That makes you feel good as a head coach.”
The Mustangs had the ball first and quickly took the lead. J.D. Faucette scored on a 3-yard run, and Trason Gartrell ran in the two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead just 1:56 into the game.
Gartrell accounted for the next touchdown as he took the ball 63 yards to the end zone. Bryce Keck made the point-after and Sanford led 15-0
Gartrell had another long touchdown run later in the first quarter, this time a 50-yard play. Keck’s point-after attempt was successful.
The Farmers looked as though they were going to go on a scoring drive as they drove to the Sanford 25. However, Jared McCarroll intercepted Kyler Jones to end the threat.
Gartrell then found the end zone for the third time, this time a 15-yard run. Keck booted in the point-after and Sanford led 29-0 at the end of the third quarter.
After a bad snap in punt formation by Sargent, Sanford scored quickly again. This time Colton Reynolds scored on a 1-yard touchdown run. Keck again made the extra point.
The Mustangs’ lead grew to 43-0 as Huntley Duran scored on a 24-yard run. Keck’s point-after was again successful and Sanford had the big lead at halftime.
Sargent avoided the shutout on its first possession of the second half. Jones threw a long pass to River Hodgson who out jumped a Sanford defender and he completed a 60-yard touchdown pass. The two-point conversion failed.
The Mustangs responded on their next possession as Colton Reynolds scored on a 46-yard run. The two-point conversion attempt was no good.
Sanford wrapped up the scoring in the fourth quarter as Ryan McCarroll ran in a 12-yard touchdown. He then threw to Kaulen Miller for the two-point conversion.
Sanford accumulated 411 yards of total offense with 365 coming in the running game. Gartrell led all rushers with 159 yards on six carries, followed by Duran with 87 yards on nine carries, and Colton Reynolds with 71 yards on four carries.
Gartrell completed two of three passes for 46 yards. Canty had one reception for 35 yards, and Ben Faucette had one for 11 yards.
Sargent had 79 yards of total offense. Jones completed five of 11 passes for 105 yards with five different receivers recording one catch.
The Farmers had minus-26 yards rushing.
Sanford (6-1, 2-0) will travel to face fifth-ranked Mancos on Friday. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
“It’s always a tough one going over there,” coach Reynolds said. “You’ll have your hands full, and it’s going to be that way again this year. We’re looking forward to it.”
Sargent (1-6, 0-2) will host Norwood on Friday with a 7 p.m. kickoff.
