MINERAL COUNTY – Mineral County Ambulance, in conjunction with UC Health in Denver, is conducting an EMT class in Creede.
There are currently 11 students in the class: seven from Creede, two from South Fork, and two from Crestone.
The four-month course of instruction consists of three hours of online lectures per week followed by four hours of hands-on labs per week where students get a chance to practice the basic skills necessary to provide quality care to sick and injured patients.
The online lectures are provided by Eve Kwaitkowski of UC Health. The lab sessions are conducted by Mineral County EMT Don Dustin with assistance from other EMTs Amy Wetherill, Terry Morgan, Charles Miller, Maddy McClure, and Jimmy Adelman.
The class began in January and once it is completed at the end of April, the students must pass a hands-on practical exam and a comprehensive written exam, both administered by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians.
Only then will they be permitted to be certified as EMTs in Colorado and can join the ranks of active EMTs in Mineral, Rio Grande, and Saguache counties.
