ALAMOSA – The Alamosa High School football team ran into a buzzsaw when it hosted Delta Friday at the AHS stadium.

Everything seemed to go wrong for the Mean Moose as they lost to the Panthers 48-14.

“If it could have gone wrong, I think it did tonight,” said Alamosa coach Drew Sandlin. “The ball didn’t drop our way and we came out flat. Delta’s a good football team and you can’t make those mistakes that we did tonight if you’re going to play a football team that good.”

Alamosa had the ball first but went three-and-out. Jhett Ryan then put Delta into scoring position with a 43-yard run, and Mack Lockhart capped off the drive with a 20-yard run. Luis Ortiz made the extra point for a 7-0 Panthers lead.

The Mean Moose fumbled the ball away on their next possession, and the Panthers took advantage, as Dominick Teal scored on an 11-yard run two plays later. Ortiz again made the point-after for a 14-0 advantage.

After another fumble early in the second quarter, the Panthers extended their lead as Cole Morlan plunged in from one yard out. Ortiz again converted the extra point.

Alamosa finally got on the scoreboard later in the second quarter. Tony Griego threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Victor Zepeda, and Christian Hernandez made the extra point to reduce the deficit to 21-7.

Delta scored one more time in the quarter as Ryan connected with Landon Hamm on a 20-yard scoring strike. Ortiz’s point-after again was good and the Panthers led 28-7 at halftime.

Delta had the ball first in the second half, and it scored again. This time Morlan scored on a 1-yard quarterback keeper and Ortiz again made the point-after.

The Panthers scored again late in the third quarter. Ryan scored on a 3-yard keeper and Ortiz made the extra point for a 42-7 advantage.

Delta was looking to score again before Ryan fumbled a high snap. A.J. Baker picked up the loose ball and ran 55 yards for a touchdown. Hernandez again made the conversion.

The Panthers scored one last time late in the game as Lockhart scored on a 22-yard run. Brennan Maez blocked the extra point attempt.

Alamosa accumulated 119 total yards – 67 rushing and 62 passing. Griego ran for 58 yards on 14 carries, and he completed five of 11 passes for 62 yards. Maez was the leading receiver with two catches for 21 yards.

Delta had 500 total yards with 412 coming on the ground. Ryan led the ground game with 159 yards on 19 carries, followed by Lockhart with 118 yards on 11 carries, and Teal with 83 yards on 13 carries.

Ryan completed seven of 18 passes for 88 yards. J.P. Gallegos was his top target with three receptions for 57 yards.

Alamosa (2-2) will open Intermountain League play on Friday as it hosts Bayfield. It is also the Mean Moose’s Homecoming game.

“It’s every head coach’s least favorite week in Homecoming,” Sandlin said. “But it’s another tough one. Going into league play, they’re one of our top challengers to win the league championship. So we’re going to have to take care of business this week.”
