ALAMOSA – The Alamosa High School softball team resumed Tri-Peaks League play on Thursday as it hosted La Junta at the Adams State University softball field.

The Mean Moose took a big lead early and had to hold off the Tigers for a 7-3 win.

“It was a good start,” said Alamosa coach Dominic Lomeli. “The girls showed a little bit of toughness and held on. We struggled a little bit with that this season, so it was good to see.”

Alamosa took the early lead as Araceli Molina sent a line drive down the right field line. She rounded the bases for an inside-the-park home run and a 1-0 lead.

The Mean Moose scored three more runs in the second. Hailie Dupont and Leah Higareda both drew walks to start the inning, and Dupont came home as Alyvia Miller reached on an outfield error. Higareda went to third on the play, and she scored on Kennedy Hillis’ sacrifice bunt.

Jayden Wubben then singled home Miller for a 4-0 Alamosa lead.

The Mean Moose scored twice in the fourth. Hillis received a base on balls with two out, and then Wubben hit an inside-the-park homer to increase the lead to 6-0.

La Junta ended Alamosa’s shutout hopes with a three-run third. Rylie Ortiz and Isabelle Aragon both walked and Alyson Pounds reached on an error to bring home Ortiz. Another error on the play allowed Aragon to come home.

Madalyn Tafoya’s double brought home Pounds to cut the Alamosa lead to 6-3.

The Mean Moose scored an insurance run in the sixth. Miller was hit by a pitch, and Taelynn Kreps-Smith singled. Molina reached on an error and Valeria Cendejas, who was pinch-running for Miller, scored.

Olivia Castillo went the distance as Alamosa’s pitcher and she earned the win. She allowed three runs and five hits and she struck out five and walked four.

The Mean Moose collected five hits and were led by Wubben who went 2-4 including a home run and three RBIs.

Alamosa (10-5, 2-1) will travel to Lamar today.

“It’s always tough to go over there,” Lomeli said. “They’re a tough team with great coaching. We’re going to have to show up on Saturday to give ourselves a shot.”

First pitch at Citizens Park is at noon.
