SAGUACHE – It was a total mismatch on Saturday as the seventh-ranked Sierra Grande High School football team faced Mountain Valley at the MVS field.
The Panthers proved their ranking as they defeated the Wolves 85-6.
“We came out and set the tone early,” said Sierra Grande coach Luis Corona. “We were able to get some turnovers and score right away. We just played football like we know how.”
“We just have to get back, get to film and see how everything goes,” said Mountain Valley coach Joel Johnson.
The story of the game was senior Jadyn Martinez, who scored in almost every way possible. He threw four touchdown passes and ran for another. He also scored twice on defense and once on special teams.
“That kid’s special,” Corona said. “He has the ability to play at the next level. So we’re just hoping to keep going for the rest of the season.”
“The team was out there doing their job,” Martinez said. “Helping me score with blocks.”
“Martinez is one of the best six-man players I’ve ever seen,” Johnson said.
Martinez scored on just the second play of the game on a 62-yard run. Rolando Najera kicked the conversion (worth two points in six-man football) and the Panthers led 8-0.
Martinez scored again, this time on defense, as he intercepted Tye Salaz and ran 24 yards to the end zone. The conversion was no good.
After the Wolves turned the ball over on downs, Martinez tossed a 13-yard touchdown to Jeremiah Lopez. The conversion was unsuccessful and Sierra Grande led 20-0.
After a Mountain Valley fumble, Martinez threw an 8-yard scoring strike to Najera. Najera also kicked in the conversion for a 28-0 lead.
Martinez and Najera hooked up again, this time for a 41-yard touchdown pass. Najera’s conversion was good again.
The Wolves ended the shutout on the ensuing kickoff as a short kick was fielded by Wyatt Bohm who ran 40 yards for the touchdown. The conversion attempt was no good.
Martinez and Jeremiah Lopez accounted for the next touchdown on a 6-yard strike. The conversion was no good and Sierra Grande led 42-6
Martinez set up the next touchdown with an interception. Najera ran in from 17 yards out and he also made the conversion to give the Panthers a 50-6 advantage at halftime.
Sierra Grande scored early in the second quarter on a 25-yard run by Sammy Gonzales. Najera again made the conversion.
Martinez then scored his second defensive touchdown as he recovered a fumble and one yard for the touchdown. The conversion failed but the Panthers led 64-6 at halftime.
Martinez scored his final touchdown early in the third quarter on a 39-yard punt return. Najera booted in the conversion for a 72-6 lead.
The Panthers scored one more time in the third as Najera threw an 8-yard touchdown to Adam Joos. Najera also threw to Martinez on the conversion (worth one point in six-man) for a 79-6 lead.
Matthew Trujillo wrapped up the scoring with a 59-yard run in the fourth quarter. The conversion was unsuccessful.
Sierra Grande had 287 yards of total offense with 217 coming on the ground. Martinez ran for 105 yards on just three carrie4s. Trujillo had 63 yards on five carries.
Martinez completed three of six passes for 62 yards. Najera had two receptions for 49 yards.
Mountain Valley had 29 total yards. Salaz completed five of 13 passes for 13 yards. Chase Shellabarger had two receptions.
Sierra Grande (4-1, 1-0) will play at Primero on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
“That’s where the tough games start,” Corona said. “We just have to get ready and prepare every week like we know how.”
Mountain Valley (1-3, 1-1) will host Bethune on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
“They’re a little more of a power team,” Johnson said. “I think they’re had an up-and-down season, but we’re excited to play them at home.”
