Arthur Augustine Ortega passed away on May 23, 2026, at the age of 90 in Denver, Colorado. He was the second-born child of Ignacio Ortega and Porfiria (Archuleta) Ortega; born on February 27, 1936, in Capulin, Colorado.
Arthur enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served from 1955 to 1959 ultimately achieving the rank of sergeant. In 1962 he married Oralia Cordova and together, they shared 58 beautiful years of marriage.
Arthur was very hard-working and spent his life leading by example, showing us all the true meaning of dedication and sacrifice. His commitment was evident throughout his 23-year career with the Colorado Department of Transportation, during which he dedicated countless hours to the maintenance and repair of roadways and long shifts of plowing through some of Colorado’s worst snowstorms.
At times, he could be impatient and demanding, especially when it came to his coffee, but at the end of the day, he was a loving father who made sure to remind you to be careful as you were walking out the door. Arthur showed deep commitment to his two sons with special needs, striving to provide them with every possible opportunity for a fulfilling life. He prioritized their spiritual growth, ensuring they consistently attended both mass and Special Religious Education programs.
Throughout the years, Arthur enjoyed fishing, hunting, and camping. He loved the outdoors and was known for planting many gardens. You would often find him sitting back in his recliner watching a John Wayne movie or an outdoor sports program. He was well-versed in current events as he enjoyed reading the newspaper and watching the news. During his final years, Arthur found joy in looking back on his youth in the San Luis Valley, sharing stories of the many experiences he shared with his siblings and close friends.
Arthur’s legacy lives on through his daughters, Agnes Ortega (Arvada, CO) and Josie Ortega (Denver, CO), and his sons, James Ortega (Wheat Ridge, CO) and Andrew Ortega (Aurora, CO). Six grandchildren and one great-grandson. Arthur’s surviving siblings are Jelina Anderson, Cecelia Roberts, Victor (Darlene) Ortega, Helen Oakes, Lawrence Ortega, Jerry (Isabell) Ortega, and Edwin Ortega. In addition, Arthur leaves behind several nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren, and dear friends.
