ALAMOSA – The eighth-ranked Alamosa High School girls basketball team played at home for the new year as it hosted Bayfield Friday at the AHS gym.

The Wolverines proved to be no match for the Mean Moose as Alamosa ran to a 63-8 victory.

“We try to prepare every game as a chance to get better,” said Alamosa coach James Romero. “Bayfield provided us that opportunity and they gave us a lot of effort. So we had an opportunity to work and get better today.”

The Mean Moose got off to a fast start as they outscored the Wolverines 23-0 in the first quarter. Jaelin Garcia led the way in the first quarter as she scored nine points, Audrina Knorr scored five, Leela Gutierrez four, Aubrey Rothermich three and Arreli Felix two.

Bayfield finally got on the scoreboard early in the second quarter on a layup by Zoe Gabb. But Alamosa scored 12 points in the second led by Brooklyn Schrader and Ashlyn Rice both with three, Garcia and Gutierrez both two, and Knorr and Rothermich one apiece.

The Wolverines managed only two more points in the quarter with Grace Brown and Kimball Anderson both scoring a point.

Gutierrez and Rothermich both scored early in the third quarter and the rest of the game was played under a running clock. Schrader and Emmalie Quintana both made a 3-point basket, and Garcia and Kyla Hawkins both scored layups in the third.

Brown and Gabb both scored to wrap up the scoring for the Wolverines.

Alamosa outscored Bayfield 14-0 in the fourth quarter. Rice and Hawkins both scored six points in the quarter, and Schrader scored two.

Garcia led the Mean Moose in scoring with 13 points, followed by Gutierrez, Schrader and Hawkins each with eight.

Gabb was Bayfield’s leading scorer with four points.
