ALAMOSA — The San Luis Valley Community Band will perform its annual Christmas/Holiday concert on Saturday, Dec. 21 at 7 p.m., in Richardson Hall, 208 Edgemont Blvd., on the campus of Adams State University. The concert is free and open to the public.
The band will perform a number of Christmas classics and some more contemporary arrangements that include “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas” and “Christmas Eve/Sarajevo” as recorded by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, the concert will also feature the Hard to Be Humble Tuba Quartet and a unique rendition of J.S. Bach's “Prelude” from the unaccompanied “Cello Suite in G Major” – adapted for two baritone saxophones by SLV Community Band Director Dr. Kerry Hart.
"The SLV Community Band, an important part of the San Luis Valley musical culture, has a tradition of excellence dating back to the approximate time of the founding of the City of Alamosa in 1878. This tradition of performing a free Christmas/Holiday concert as a service to the community by the local community band dates back to the early 1900s. The band has been a cornerstone of the community, providing musical entertainment and fostering a love for music among its members and the audience. This year's concert is a continuation of this rich tradition," said Hart, Director of the SLV Community Band.
The Christmas/Holiday concert is the latest in a series of successful performances by the SLV Community Band. These include a concert at the Potato Festival in Monte Vista on Sept. 9, and most recently, a performance at the Monte Vista Chamber of Commerce Holiday Bazaar held at the Outcalt Event and Conference at SLV Ski-Hi Complex on Dec. 7.
Support for the Christmas/Holiday concert is thanks to contributions from SLV Federal Bank, Frontier Bank, the ASU Music Department, the Alamosa School District, and numerous individuals.
The concert is free; we encourage donations to help support the SLV Community Band. Your contributions will help us continue our tradition of providing concerts to the community and supporting local musicians. Donations will be accepted at the door.
The SLV Community Band is a welcoming community open to any musician with band experience. Current participants range in age from middle school students to retirement age.
The band encourages any musician interested in becoming a member to contact Hart at 719-587-3342.
