Sierra Grande sweeps Creede

Scores were 25-9, 25-18 and 26-24

BLANCA – The Sierra Grande High School volleyball team scored a three-set sweep of Creede Thursday at the Panthers’ gym.

The Lady Panthers had a relatively easy time in the first set as they defeated the Lady Miners 25-9. But Creede gave Sierra Grande a battle in the second and third sets winning by scores of 25-18 and 26-24.

The Lady Panthers got off to a good start in the first set by scoring the first four points. The Lady Miners closed the margin to 5-3, but Sierra Grande went on an 8-1 run to extend its lead to 13-4.

Creede scored three straight points, but Sierra Grande did the same. The Lady Miners closed to within 17-9, but the Lady Panthers scored the final eight points to take a 25-9 win.

Creede scored the first point of the second set, but Sierra Grande answered by scoring seven consecutive points. The Lady Panthers increased the lead to 14-5, but the Lady Miners went on a 6-3 run to reduce their deficit to 17-11.

Sierra Grande pushed the lead to 20-12, but Creede had a 6-1 rally to close within 21-18. The Lady Panthers scored the final four points for a 25-18 victory.

The Lady Panthers opened the third set by scoring the first four points, The Lady Miners narrowed the margin to 4-2 before Sierra Grande scored two straight points for a 6-2 lead.

Creede came back to tie the score at 7-7. The Lady Panthers then went on an 8-3 run to increase their lead to 15-10.

The Lady Panthers had an 18-13 lead before the Lady Miners tied the score at 19-19. Sierra Grande regained the lead at 21-19, but Creede again tied the score at 21-21.

The Lady Panthers took the lead back at 22-21, but the Lady Miners took a 23-22 edge. Sierra Grande regained the lead at 24-23, but Creede deadlocked the score at 24-24.

The Lady Panthers scored the final two points to take a 26-24 win.

Sierra Grande was led by Audrianna Gerardo with 25 assists. Ahlea Garcia led in kills with nine, followed by Eneria Quintana with seven and Jaylyn Quezada with six.

The Lady Panthers had 14 service aces and were led by Gerardo with four. Quezada and Quintana both had three, and Garcia and Aleigha Sanchez both had two.

Taylor Carpenter led Creede with eight assists. Jasmine Laing had four kills.

Faith Cooper had five aces and Bee Jenkins had four.

Sierra Grande (5-15, 2-2) hosted Centennial on Friday and will host Cotopaxi today.

Creede (4-7, 0-4) hosted Mountain Valley on Friday and will host Dolores today.
