Robert "Bob" Kernen, a long-time resident of Del Norte, Colo., peacefully passed away on his birthday, Wednesday, June 28, 2023. Bob was born on June 28, 1950, in Del Norte, Colo., to his parents, John and Betty Kernen.
Bob had a deep love for his ranch and his animals held a special place in his heart. However, as Bob's body grew weary, he wanted to spend his remaining days surrounded by his children and grandchildren. During this time, they shared stories about the animals, the ranch, the importance of hard work and resilience (“being a tough old bird”), and, of course, Bob’s favorite basketball team, the Denver Nuggets.
Over the years, Bob's enduring fondness for animals, along with his appreciation for nature, proved to bring him solace and peace. He attended Colorado State University, completing his Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science. He cultivated a deep love for the ranch life working as a Cattle Rancher for more than 50 years. His commitment to his animals and land was evident and will be cherished for many generations to come.
Bob is survived by his sister Jan (Dennis) Voth, his brother John “Jay” (Cathy) Kernen, his son, John (Katie) Kernen, his daughter Casey (Matthew) Trujillo, and six grandchildren — Elizabeth, Ruthie, Gracie, and Miles Kernen, as well as Riley and Brynley Trujillo.
He will be reunited in Heaven with his parents, John and Betty, and his brother, Fred, who preceded him in death.
Bob will be remembered by family, friends, the countless animals he has cared for over the years, and, his faithful canine companion, Shiner.
John and Casey would like to thank the employees of the Rio Grande Hospital and the team at Sunny Vista Living Center for their support and loving care over the past few months.
To honor Bob’s memory, we’d like to invite friends and family to join us at the Kernen Ranch for food and drinks on Sunday, Aug. 6, anytime after 1 p.m.
