ALAMOSA – The Alamosa High School boys soccer team hosted its Homecoming contest on Thursday as it faced Gunnison at the AHS stadium.
However, an unfortunate goal proved to be the difference as the Cowboys defeated the Mean Moose 1-0.
“It was quite unfortunate,” said Alamosa coach Hector Ramos Garcia. “I thought my team worked extremely hard. But that’s the way the game goes sometimes. Just one lucky bounce doesn’t go your way. But I’m proud of my team and I appreciate the way they all worked hard. I know we have some guys that are dealing with some lingering issues, but I’m proud of them for fighting through, pushing through and finishing the game strong.”
There was no scoring in the first half with Alamosa attempting three shots on goal, and Gunnison two.
The Cowboys put on the pressure and finally got on the scoreboard in the 53rd minute on an unassisted goal by Eli Coop.
The Mean Moose had three good opportunities to score later in the game. First, a shot was stopped by Gunnison goalkeeper Sam Anderson, then a free kick was on target but went over the goal. Finally, another shot in the box was blocked late in the game.
Todd Broyles was the Mean Moose’s goalkeeper and he recorded 10 saves.
Gunnison put 11 shots on goal, compared to five by Alamosa. The Cowboys also had seven corner kicks and the Mean Moose had none.
Alamosa (2-5-3, 1-0-2) will return to Intermountain League play on Saturday as it will host Pagosa Springs. The teams played to a 1-1 draw earlier this year in Pagosa.
“We look forward to going back into league play,” Ramos Garcia said. “We know we’re are currently undefeated in league play. Last time we went up against Pagosa, it was a hard-fought battle. We had the lead for most of the game and we had an unfortunate goal at the end to give up the tie. So it’s really unfortunate to give up points to a league rival, but we look forward to getting another crack at them and they’re always a fun team to play.”
