ALAMOSA — Capulin resident David O’Brien, 50, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and domestic violence over the weekend in connection with the death of his wife. Her name is not being released at this time pending notification of next of kin. The homicide took place on the outskirts of Capulin in Conejos County.
Lt. Antonio Galvez, an investigator with the Conejos County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), says he was contacted by dispatch at 2:30 a.m. Friday morning with information from Conejos County Hospital that there was a stabbing victim in the emergency room who was pronounced deceased. O’Brien, the victim’s husband, was at the hospital.
Galvez and another investigator spoke to O’Brien who gave them an account of the incident. After looking into what they were told, Galvez says they found O’Brien’s story to be “not true.”
While they were investigating the crime, Galvez received another call through dispatch saying that O’Brien had admitted to “one of his doctors,” that he had stabbed his wife.
On Saturday afternoon, Galvez and other officers took O’Brien into custody and booked him into the Conejos County Jail on felony charges where he is awaiting bond. It’s anticipated that O’Brien will appear in court for his arraignment sometime on Monday afternoon.
The Conejos County Sheriff’s Office wishes to express special thanks to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the investigator with the District Attorney’s Office and the Alamosa Police Department for their assistance.
