ANTONITO – It was a tough day for the Antonito High School football team Saturday when it hosted La Veta at the AHS field.
The Trojans had almost half of their team on the injured list and it led to them losing to the Redhawks by a score of 60-12.
Antonito had the ball first but punted. La Veta was pinned deep in its own territory after the punt, and then a bad snap from center put the Redhawks on their own 4.
However, La Veta scored on the very next play as Sunny Kent ran 76 yards for a touchdown. The conversion attempt was no good and La Veta led 6-0.
After another Trojans punt, the Redhawks scored on another long play. This time Sunny Kent ran 57 yards to the end zone, but once again the conversion failed.
Antonito fumbled on its next possession and La Veta turned the takeaway into points as David Roel threw a 13-yard touchdown to Kendall Ingram. The conversion attempt was blocked but La Veta led 18-0.
The Trojans fumbled the ball away again the next time they had the ball, and the Redhawks again turned the turnover into points. Ingram capped off the drive with a 2-yard run, but the kick again failed and La Veta had a 24-0 lead.
The Trojans had another turnover on their next possession, and Kaydyn Kent scored on a 5-yard run. The conversion again was no good and La Veta led 30-0 at halftime.
The Redhawks had the ball first in the second half and it didn’t take long to get back to the end zone as Matthew Gonzales ran 58 yards for a touchdown on the first play of the third quarter. The kick again was blocked.
Antonito finally got on the scoreboard on its first possession of the second half. Rylan Trant threw a 61-yard touchdown pass to Lucas Cordova, but the conversion failed.
La Veta turned the ball over on downs on its next possession and Antonito scored on the very next play. Trant and Cordova hooked up again, this time on a 30-yard scoring strike. The conversion was unsuccessful and La Veta had a 36-12 lead.
The Redhawks quickly answered as Roel threw a 64-yard touchdown to Kaydyn Kent. Marcelo Lofgren kicked the extra point (worth two points in six-man football) and La Veta had a 44-12 lead.
The Redhawks got one more touchdown before the third quarter ended as Roel tossed a 12-yard touchdown to Sunny Kent. Lofgren again kicked in the conversion and La Veta led 52-12 at the end of the period.
Antonito turned the ball over on the first play of the fourth quarter and La Veta again turned the takeaway into points. Roel tossed a 22-yard strike to Kaydyn Kent and Lofgren again booted the conversion for a 60-12 lead.,
Antonito managed only 124 yards of total offense including 136 in the air. Trant completed six out of 17 passes and Cordova was his top target with four receptions for 125 yards.
The Trojans, however, had minus-12 yards on the ground.
La Veta had 425 total yards – 305 rushing and 120 passing. Sunny Kent led the ground game with 190 yards on seven carries.
Roel completed six of seven passes for 120 yards. Kaydyn Kent had two catches for 86 yards and Sunny Kent had two receptions for 14 yards.
Antonito (0-6, 0-4) will wrap up the season this coming Saturday as it will host 10th-ranked Primero. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
