Alamosa boys drop two weekend games

ALAMOSA – It was a rough weekend for the Alamosa High School boys basketball team as it lost a pair of home games. The Mean Moose lost to Montrose 50-25 on Friday and to Delta 58-49 on Saturday.

Montrose 50, Alamosa 25

Victor Zepeda gave the Mean Moose the early lead with a pair of 3-point baskets. Kaleb Ferguson put the Redhawks on the board, and Brekin Hutto made one of two from the free throw line to cut the Alamosa lead to 6-3 at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter was all Montrose as it scored 23 points and held Alamosa to zero. Ferguson led the Redhawks in the quarter with nine points and Montrose had a 26-6 advantage at halftime.

Ferguson began the third quarter by splitting at the line. Zepeda finally ended Alamosa’s long drought with a jumper.

Ferguson scored in the paint, but Tony Griego made a layup and Zepeda another three to cut the deficit to 29-13.

Ferguson made another layup, but Zepeda made his fourth trey and Jayden Lujan drove for a layup to narrow the Montrose lead to 31-18.

However, Ferguson scored again, and Josh Hawks drained a 3-pointer and Montrose led 36-18 at the end of the third.

Ferguson started the fourth quarter with two more layups, but Zepeda scored in the paint, and Jaidyn Burciaga drained a three.

Otto Sandeno made a layup, and Mason Swallow hit a pair of 3-pointers. Zepeda scored Alamosa’s final points, and Jonathan Rytlewski scored the final points for Montrose.

Zepeda led Alamosa with 19 points.

Ferguson was Montrose’s top scorer with 20 points.

Delta 58, Alamosa 49

The Panthers got off to a fast start by scoring the first nine points of the game. Erik Baier scored four of the points, and Joe Black scored three.

Zepeda scored the Mean Moose’s first points with a 3-point basket. Baier scored another layup, and after Josh Gonzalez made one of two free throws, Black made nother three, followed by layups by Rhett Miramontes and Jhett Ryan and Delta had an 18-4 lead.

Griego ended the rally with a jumper, followed by Zepeda making two free throws, and Ja’Rell Long and Griego making one to cut the deficit to 18-10 at the end of the first quarter.

Brennan Maez began the second quarter with a layup and Zepeda made a trey to help Alamosa close within 18-15.

J.P. Gallegos scored a layup for Delta, and after Griego split at the line, Baier and Ryan both scored to push the lead to 24-16.

Nelson Arambula made two free throws, but Black and Baier both scored layups and Gallegos made two free throws for a 30-18 lead.

Zepeda and Maez both buried 3-pointers and Maez also scored a layup to bring the Mean Moose within 30-26. But Jackson Kincaide made two baskets in the final second and Delta had a 34-26 lead at halftime.

Burciaga made two of out three free throws to begin the second half scoring. But Gallegos hit a three.

Maez made back-to-back layups, but Miramontes knocked down a jumper. Griego scored a layup, but Gallegos made a jumper, and Black made two free throws for a 43-34 lead.

Baier made a layup, but Zepeda made two out of three from the line. Miramontes then drained a 3-pointer, but Maez answered with a layup.

KIncaide drove for a layup, but Gonzales made two free throws. Arambula then made a 3-pointer, Griego split at the line, and Zepeda made a layup to reduce the Delta lead to 50-46 at the end of the third quarter.

Gonzalez and Griego both split at the line to bring Alamosa within 50-48. But Tyler Yost hit a jumper.

Maez made one of two free throws, but Miramontes and Gallegos both made two from the line, and Miramontes made a layup to wrap up the scoring.

Zepeda scored 15 points and Maez 14 to lead the Mean Moose.

Gallegos led Delta with 12 points, and Baier and Black both had 10.

Alamosa (2-7) will begin Intermountain League play on Friday as it will travel to Bayfield. It will host Montezuma-Cortez on Saturday.
