South Fork plans for blood drive, invites Valley to participate

Be sure to sign up for the South Fork Blood Drive and help save a life!

SOUTH FORK—There will be a Valley blood drive coming up on Saturday, Nov. 3 at the South Fork Community Building from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 pm. The event is open to anyone who wishes to participate. In previous years, the event has seen anywhere from 50 to 100 people come and donate blood. According to event coordinator Karen Miller, organizers would like to double that number and bring more people in for this great cause.
Those who wish to participate need to follow some simple instructions prior to having their blood donated. People wanting to donate should check with their regular physician in case regularly taken medication could make them ineligible. Several people stop taking certain medication a month before the event in order to participate, but anyone wishing to do this should always get approval from their physician first.
Next, it is recommended that participants eat an iron-rich, low-fat diet in order to help replenish blood supply after donating. The iron-rich food will help with the replenishing process after the event, keeping the donor in good health. Anyone donating should also be in good health. Anyone showing signs of a common cold, flu-like symptoms or any other diseases should not donate.
The name of the company that does the event has been changed from United Blood Services to Vitalant, but it’s the same great blood drive, the same great nurses and it accomplishes the same great things for the community. Blood donation makes a monumental impact on the lives of people across the country and here locally. “Several volunteers have generously given your time to come donate and make such a difference,” said Miller.
“When people donate, Vitalant will send a card with your blood type. Also, Vitalant will perform a ‘total cholesterol’ test on a sample of your donation. The confidential results will be available within seven days of the donation. Please consider signing up for the coming blood drive and help those that need it,” stated Miller
