South Fork hosts Chili Cook-Off today

The annual South Fork Chili Cook Off will be held this Thursday at the South Fork Fire Rescue building behind the Carnegie Library. Come out and spice up the night with homemade chili from local residents and restaurants.

Trunk-or-treat set for Halloween

SOUTH FORK— It is that time of year again where hunters gather in the area around South Fork and are looking forward to the annual Chili Cook-Off on Thursday, Oct. 11, 5 p.m. at the South Fork Fire Department. This year the South Fork Visitors Center has announced that all proceeds from the event will go towards families of fallen emergency responders.
The purpose of the annual event is to bring a little bit of spice to the slow season in South Fork and offers an excellent opportunity for hunters who are visiting the area to speak with representatives with the Colorado Parks and Wildlife before heading out on their hunts. CPW representatives set up a table at the Chili Cook-Off and are present to answer questions, give out maps of the area and hunting tips for those who want to know what it takes to come home with a trophy elk or deer.
Those participating in the cook-off have free range in three categories: green chili, red chili and salsa. Several local residents and restaurants participate each year, bringing out their secret recipes to share with 200-300 guests who attend. Contestants are also asked to decorate their tables, which are provided by the visitor center, adding a decorative edge to the competition. There will be first, second and third place winners as well as people’s choice by the end of the night in all of the categories.
Last year was one of the busiest years the cook-off has seen in a while. There were 250 guests that came to taste test chili from 11 contestants and was enjoyed by all who participated.
The Chapel of South Fork will provide dessert, delicious food like hotdogs for guests to put chili on and beverages. Be sure to come out and enjoy the spice of South For.
Once the Chili Cook-Off is in the rearview mirror, the South Fork Fire Rescue (SFFR) will be hosting a new event for children in the area on Halloween. SFFR has something special planned for the night of Halloween and are asking for people to sign up to participate in a Trunk or Treat event at the station.
SFFR has planned a Halloween Extravaganza for the residents of South Fork and would like to invite the rest of the Valley to come and join in on the fun as well. The night will include fun and games for the entire family and include a dinner of hotdogs donated by Two Rivers BBQ. There will be games and even a costume contest for those who wish to participate.
The night kicks off at 5 p.m. at the fire station in South Fork located behind the South Fork Carnegie Library.
