South Fork brings frisbee golf to town

Town gearing up for spring activities

SOUTH FORK— South Fork is preparing for an epic year ahead with plans for a 25th anniversary celebration that is expected to last through the busy season. In the meantime, Visitor Center Director Mark Teders has an agenda full of fun activities planned for the spring season and the early birds who venture into the area. Teders has been busy working on his schedule for the coming spring, hoping to bring a diverse schedule that is sure to please anyone interested in getting out and about this spring.
To begin the season, Teders is working with Trisha Taylor with Upper Rio Grande Properties to create a new outdoor recreational opportunity for guests and residents. The idea was to utilize the area behind the ball field located near the community center in town without having a high financial responsibility. Teders and Taylor came up with a plan to place frisbee golf cages around the area in a fun and interactive pattern for frisbee golf play.
The game will add just the right amount of fun to the already long list of things to do in the area. There will be nine “holes” for players to use for the sport. Teders explained that the baskets are slowly being purchased and that anyone wishing to donate to the cause is welcome to do so. There is a basket on display at the visitor center with a selection of the different sized frisbees used to play the sport for those who may not be familiar to the game. Frisbee golf will be a great addition to the pickle ball court that sits in front of the area where the course will reside.
In addition to the new sport, every Thursday night is movie night at the community center. Teders selects a family-friendly movie for the week and displays a schedule of the selections at the visitor center. The movie includes a prelude of old fashioned cartoons before the main feature and includes snacks for a small donation. So far, the event has been very popular and Teders plans to keep it on the schedule throughout the year.
Coming this Saturday, April 15 is the Annual Easter Egg Hunt at Rickel Park just as travelers come into town. The event is an area favorite with tons of fun activities, door prizes and of course colorful eggs for children to find hidden in area. The Easter bunny will also make an appearance for photo opportunities. This year’s event will be joined by a new addition to the annual fun with a kite festival. After the egg hunt is over, be sure to stick around for an afternoon of flying good fun.
The visitor center partnered with the chamber will be supplying free kites to participants who want to “go fly a kite,” as the saying goes. Town officials are hoping to get a better response this year, after a failed attempt the previous spring. The day is sure to be fun for the entire family.
AT the end of the month, be sure to stop by the visitor center for one last event before the busy season kicks off in town. Teders will be hosting an astronomy program on April 26 at 8:15 p.m. The program will include viewing of different planets that can be seen during this time of year and interesting facts about the solar system. For more information on the upcoming activities, please call the visitor center at 873-5512.
