Radar trailer purchase reminds people of their speed

SOUTH FORK— A new addition to the roads around South Fork will be seen from now on that will help remind people to slow down and watch their speed. According to South Fork Police Chief Don McDonald the town recently purchased a new trailer radar from CDOT and the department will be placing it in neighborhoods and along the highway to try and get people to slow down.

“We plan on rotating locations between the highways and residential areas to make people aware and to watch their speeds. We have the solar speed limit signs posted on the east side of town, but that doesn’t stop people from going too fast. With this new radar on the trailer, we can change locations and get the attention of travelers throughout town,” explained McDonald.

The new trailer with the radar is part of the department’s efforts to enforce speed throughout town limits and to deter people from going too fast. “If we can get them to slow down and pay attention in town, maybe we can get them to continue as they head out,” said McDonald.

Now that the town is AT- friendly, the increase in traffic along the roadways has been a cause for concern when it comes to speed. “Anything we can do to get people to slow down is very important. We have a lot of people in the area during the summer and we want to keep them as safe as possible,” said McDonald.

Once the radar has been programed, the department will be able to record speeds and even traffic counts in the future. “We will be able to see how many people pass through the area and record the speed when they pass the radar. It will help us determine areas where we need to post officers and keep an eye out for speeders,” said McDonald.

The department is also continuing their efforts to reach out to the community and build trust among both residents and guests. “We will always be working to build within the community. We need people out there that trust us in order to do our jobs to the best of our abilities. It’s an important part of what we do,” said McDonald.

“We like to remind people to slow down and enjoy the scenery. We have a beautiful town and the speeds are set at what they are for a reason.” The radar will be moved periodically throughout the summer.
