Creede revs engines for Canyon Car Show

CREEDE — The annual Cruisin’ the Canyon Car Show kicks off this weekend in Creede and with it comes the best of the best in classic, unique and snazzy vehicles of all makes and models.

This annual event is an area favorite and coincides with the changing of the seasons in the small mountain town of Creede. Fall is just starting to peak in the high country and the aspen trees may steal the show.

Fall used to be the start of the slow season in Creede and that was when local Holy Moses giftshop owners Vicky and Nick Kulyk decided it was time to bring in some guests and change the way fall happened in Creede.

Over the course of the years, the event has grown into one the most beloved events in the area and bring hundreds of people to the San Juan Mountains to enjoy the fall colors and some hotrods.

The event starts Friday night, Sept. 16, with a pre-registration party at the visitor center located south of Creede. Participating vehicle owners can mingle with the public and enjoy some light refreshments as they prepare for the show on Saturday.

Saturday morning will start off with more registration at 8 a.m. at the Mineral County Courthouse. The car show starts at 10 a.m. and will last until the awards ceremony at 3 p.m. People can come to enjoy the last few days of the Creede Repertory Theatre’s season, walk the many shops and enjoy a meal at any of the restaurants that will be open for the event.

On Saturday afternoon after the award ceremony, people and vehicle owners are invited to participate in the annual Rod Run up Highway 149 toward the Freemons’ Store and North Clear Creek Falls. The road weaves in and out of some spectacular country that is surrounded by aspen groves that are expected to be magnificent this year.

According to reports from the National Forest Service, the fall colors are expected to be in top form this year due to the cooler temperatures and high precipitation.

On Sunday, guests and vehicle owners are invited to enjoy a fly over event at the Mineral County Airport. Plane owners from neighboring communities fly into Creede Sunday morning to enjoy breakfast and wander among the vintage vehicles.
