Creede boys advance to State

SAN LUIS VALLEY — The regional basketball tournaments over the weekend thinned the herd. From the start there were 12 different teams from eight different schools in 1A and 2A. Those numbers have since been cut down to three.

For 1A regionals all the games were played in La Junta. In attendance were Sangre de Cristo’s girls and boys, Sierra Grande’s girls and boys, Antonito girls and Creede’s boys.

Sangre de Cristo had a strong opening day with both teams winning their first games. The lady Thunderbirds took down Eads in a 52-35 game. The boys from Mosca had a near identical game when they took down Cheraw in a 54-35 win.

Sierra Grande’s girls could not get past Holly. The Holly Wildcats completed a 68-46 victory over Sierra Grande. With Holly’s win they went onto face Antonito Saturday.

On Saturday in the first game of the day Antonito couldn’t get past Holly suffering a 44-38 defeat. Sangre de Cristo’ girls renewed the series with Kim/Branson; the T-Birds couldn’t alter the result falling 47-25. Both Creede and Sangre de Cristo’s boys advanced. The Creede Miners survived a fourth quarter surge to take a 58-56 victory over Kit Carson while Sangre de Cristo bumped Sierra Grande in a 43-39 game to claim their way.

Sangre de Cristo has now seen the likes of Sierra Grande three times this year. The first two meetings, during the regular season and district tournament, went to Sierra Grande. The first quarter looked like it might be as well when Sangre went down 14-5. But a nice recovery in the second and third quarter brought the T-Birds within four.

Set up nicely the Thunderbirds saw the opportunity and took their shot outscoring Sierra Grande in the final stanza 12-4. Sangre’s success was driven by the ability to keep Sierra Grande’s Arthur Rodriguez relatively quiet. Keeping Rodriguez to just 19 points could well be considered keeping him in check.

Creede utilized the middle quarters to drive a win over Kit Carson’s Wildcats. The first quarter the Miners were trailing 19-16. They would work through the next two taking a 46-37 lead into the final quarter. The Wildcat’s in a final ditch effort would once again outscore Creede 19-12 yet it was not enough as the Miners would take the slim two-point win.

Isaac Borchers and Casper Freedle led the Miners with 17 and 15 points respectively. Borchers collected a double-double pulling down 17 boards in addition to his team leading scoring total.

Sangre de Cristo (20-4-0) will open the state tournament against Peetz (22-1-0) at 8:30 p.m. on Mar. 8th. The Peetz Bulldogs completed the regular season with a perfect 19-0 record. They would pick up that blemish in the district tournament against Heritage Christian. The Bulldogs are lead by seniors Logan Sircy and Gabe Naegele. Sircy is the main scorer while Naegele anchors the paint.

As the number one seed, Creede (20-3-0) will face number eight Cornerstone Christian Academy (15-7-0) at 1:15 p.m. on March 8. Cornerstone’s Bulldogs fell short at Districts but made up for it at Regionals when they knocked off DeBeque to advance to state. The Bulldogs house two main threats Brandt Vos who owns all five of the team double-doubles, and Christian Lambertson who averages 12.7 points per game.
