Community yard sale signals tidy time in South Fork

SOUTH FORK— The community-wide yard sale returns to South Fork for the third consecutive year on Saturday, June 8. Sponsored by the Friends of South Fork with support from town administration, the annual cleanup benefits in many different ways.
Yard sellers who plan to move goods from home need to call 719-873-5512 or email [email protected] before May 22 to provide their address. Like a treasure map, a guide through South Fork will list individual sales. The city-wide cleanup will also include two locations — the Community Center and the Visitors Center — for people who want to sell through a flea market atmosphere instead.
And according to South Fork Town Administrator Dan Hicks, residents who don’t plan to sell anything can use temporary dumpsters behind the Visitors Center during the weekend for free. Hicks said they will accommodate most refuse, although they can’t take appliances, mattresses, paint and toxic materials.
To add dazzle to the day, the Friends of South Fork plan to hide painted rocks and surprise objects with local prizes and certificates at various locations throughout the community sale. Like a geocache scavenger hunt, searching for prizes will give yard-sale shoppers added incentive to stick around South Fork for awhile. Instead of having of an early-morning tornado of commerce and a quiet day after customers pick over everything, the South Fork Community Yard sale will provide a festive atmosphere with participants redeeming meal discounts and other treats and coupons within the hidden prizes.
On top of two sales sites in the heart of town, yard sales on the map will likely stretch from Alpine to Masonic Park and beyond. Scheduled to run from 8 a.m. to approximately 3 p.m., the Third Annual South Fork Community Yard Sale will gather people and bolster street appeal before visitors stream through town for the season.
Typically, yard sales conclude with price drops that turn into donations. Early birds find the treasures, acute observers find prizes and late shoppers find deals. But everyone in South Fork will find the benefits of cleaner streets and a weekend together with customers from across the San Luis Valley.
Anyone considering an estate sale in South Fork should schedule it for June 8. All proceeds go to the sellers, who also benefit from spring cleaning at home while the Friends of South Fork handle marketing and advertising. Also, dump fees can be significant for any size yard sale. But thanks to the Town of South Fork, using the free dumpster is a bonus.
Participants can set up the night before (Friday, June 7), and the dumpster is scheduled to be in place too.
