ALAMOSA — Barely more than a week after petitions to recall 12^th Judicial District Attorney Alonzo Payne were handed out to people gathering signatures, Alamosa City Manager Heather Brooks reports that, as of Friday, 1,072 individuals in the San Luis Valley had signed.

According to Brooks, more than 60 petitions were being circulated for signatures with one packet already returned as complete. One packet has space for 80 signatures.

“We have a hard count of 1,072 signatures, but we haven’t heard back from 20 circulators, whom I know have gotten signatures,” Brooks said.

Brooks reported that petitions were being circulated in Alamosa, Rio Grande, Costilla and Conejos counties, including the towns of Alamosa, Moffat, Center, Monte Vista, Del Norte, Saguache, Antonito, Mosca and Crestone.

“We feel that this is a very good start considering the petitions were first handed out Wednesday, April 20, just a week ago,” she said.

In March, Alamosa City Council passed an ordinance allowing the expenditure of up to $10,000 for participation in the recall campaign. When asked how much money had been spent Brooks said the city had used approximately $2,450.18 of the funds authorized by council.

Included in that approximate sum was $460 spent on items including “petition printing, upcoming utility stuffers, lanyards, registered voter lists, etc.” The remaining funds from the $2,450.18 have been spent on “staff tracking their time spent on the effort.”

Brooks emphasized that the figures are just approximate, at this point, and include “placeholders” where actual expenditures have yet to be made.

Those involved in the recall campaign have until June 17 to submit petitions with a minimum of 4,000 signatures.

Brooks says the goal is to collect 6,000 signatures by May 23.
