Cabin Fever Days are only weeks away

CREEDE- It is about this time of year that everyone in the San Luis valley is itching to get outside and enjoy a day away from the normal array of winter, which is why the coming Cabin Fever Daze in Creede is a great opportunity to do just that,
The event has been a part of Creede’s history for several years and whicle searching through the archieves of the Mineral County Miner, one can easily see how the event has helped those suffering from the winter blues get a break from the mundane and have some fun.
One event in particular took place 39 years ago and included activities like a 4.5 kilometer down hill race known at the time as the Bachelor Mountain Fun Run. From an article printed in the March 11, 1982 edition of the Mineral County Miner it states, “Creede’s Cabin Fever Daze came off to smiles, tired legs and cold toes this weekend, despite fears that spring had come too soon. The winter carnival opened Friday with more than 20 people turning out for a moonlight ski tour and more than three times that number for a free wine and fondue party at the Golden Nugget.”
The festival continues this year with a new light but the feeling of the festival remains the same. According to the Creede and Mineral County Chamber the event will kick off the weekend of February 14 with a Valentines and fundraiser dance hosted by the Mineral County Fairgrounds Association at the Elks Lodge in town.
Tickets for the dance are $50 per person and all funds raised during the event will go towards the Fairground Association. Tickets also include a prime rib dinner and a chance to win a OHV Razor.
Other activities will include Ice Curling at the Silver Ice Park on Saturday and Sunday. Those interesting in signing up for a curling team can get more information through the chamber by visiting www.creede.com or by calling 719-685-2374.
The C. Waters Gallery will have live artists demonstrations with the theme, “Cabins” and the Quiller Gallery will be open throughout the weekend. Weather permitting there will also be a Nordic ski tour and ice carving competitions.
The Creede Repertory Theatre will have two showings of their infamous play Boomtown at 5 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15. For more information or to book reservations, please visit www.creederep.org.
There will also be children activities at the Virginia Christiansen Multi-Use Facility from 4 p.m. until 6:15 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday will include some interesting talks from noon until 4 p.m. at The Ruth Theatre on Main Street.
