SOUTH FORK— Local resident and member of the Friends of South Fork, Kris Steffens, presented the board with plans for the Colorado Rural Philanthropy Days 2019 during their monthly work session on Sept. 11.
Steffens attended a workshop in Del Norte and learned that the town was vying to be the host community for the event last week and asked the board to consider partnering with Del Norte.
“This is a great opportunity for both South Fork and Del Norte. The event brings about 300 to 350 people to the area and South Fork is the only location that has the accommodations to house these individuals if Del Norte is chosen to be the host community,” stated Steffens.
Board members took a moment to look over the literature that Steffens provided and asked several questions pertaining to the event. Trustee Vicki Phillips stated that she attended the previous event that was held in Creede four years ago, stating that she felt it was more than a worthwhile cause and that officials in South Fork should at least consider serving on the many different committees that help plan the event.
“There is an opportunity here for the towns to make money as well as apply for grant funding that could help with several projects here in South Fork. I can say with certainty that the Friends of South Fork will have at least one to two people on some of the committees that help with hospitality and planning. I urge the board to consider one or more of the committees responsible for planning the event and if you don’t have the time to do so, ask around. See if you may know of someone that can serve on a committee. I think the more involved we are, the better,” stated Steffens.
Colorado Rural Philanthropy Days is a conference geared towards bringing local governments, non-profit organizations and social service individuals together and aid them in future projects. The conference guides these individuals towards grants, funding and ideas to better serve the community in which they reside. The conference offers solutions that can best impact local communities in rural areas around Colorado. The organization gives local non-profits access to financial resources, collaborative opportunities and professional development services.
The event has been held in both Saguache and Creede within the last 29 years and each time the conference has come to the Valley it has not only boosted the economy over the three-day period but brought the opportunity to local businesses and organizations to apply for grant funding.
Steffens stated that the Friends of South Fork plans on meeting with grant makers to secure funding for projects like rehabilitating the local pickle ball court, aid with costs of moving the annual Logger Days event to another location and other projects that would benefit the local community.
“I just wanted to be able to discuss this with you and let you know that it is coming up in a year. South Fork is the only community that can house that many people and we have a chance to strengthen our partnerships with Del Norte and Monte Vista. Please consider participating,” finished Steffens.
The board thanked her for her efforts and stated that they would take it under advisement.By Lyndsie Ferrell
